2007 - 2011

This project is one of the seven projects that the University of Malawi implemented with various Norwegian partner institutions in 2007 and 2011 NUFU funding cycle. It was a collaborative project between the Department of Political and Administrative Studies (PAS), Chancellor College, University of Malawi and the Department of Comparative Politics (DCP), University of Bergen, Norway. Other partner institutions include the Centre for Social Research (CSR) of the University of Malawi and Christiansen Michelson Institute (CMI), University of Bergen, Norway. The NUFU programme supported two types of projects: 1) bilateral; and 2) network. The Democracy Consolidation in Malawi project was a bilateral project since it involves collaboration exclusively between two institutions: University of Malawi and University of Bergen.

The project had two major components. The first component was field research on three key sub-thematic areas namely:

  1. constitution and constitutionalism;
  2. decentralization and state formation; and
  3. role non-state actors in democratization. The second component was capacity building at PhD level.
