Richard joined the Department in 2002 after successfully working as a Cooperatives Training Officer in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Human Management Resources Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture.
From the entry post of Staff Associate, Richard has risen through the ranks to position of Professor of Public Administration. He completed his PhD in Public Policy and Management at the University of Manchester in England. He holds the Master of Public Administration and Bachelor of Public Administration (Honours) degrees both from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa; and the Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration degree from the University of Malawi.
Richard’s areas of interest include public management, public administration, public policy, public governance, organisational analysis, institutions and development. Richard has a very good track record of publications having edited a book, published several articles in international academic journals, and as book chapters. One of his journal articles entitled “Who is Fooling Who?: New Public Management Oriented Management Accounting and Political Control in the Malawi’s Local Governance” that appeared in the 2007 Journal of Accounting and Organizational Change, 3 (3): 302-328, won the 2008 Emerald Awards for Excellence. Apart from being involved in facilitating training for local and international organisations, he has also carried out several consultancy assignments for the same.
On the Administrative front, Richard has been Head of Department, Deputy Head of Department and a member of several Faculty of Social Sciences committees. Currently, he is Principal of Chancellor College.
Chancellor College is the largest among the constituent colleges of the University of Malawi. Ever since its establishment, the college has produced graduates who have gone on to become leaders in various sectors of Malawian society.
